Bilirubin is a by-product of red blood cell breakdown, it is ultimately processed by the liver to allow its elimination from the body.
Bilirubin is a by-product of red blood cell breakdown and an important component of bile; functions as an antioxidant. May be elevated due to excess haemolysis, liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, Gilbert's Syndrome. May be decreased due to oxidative stress, zinc deficiency.
